ForbSpace Conducts Environmental Spatial Mapping and Community Outreach in Mt. Elgon

The ForbSpace field team recently completed a location-enabled data collection exercise in the Mt. Elgon region, mapping crucial forest and river data while engaging the local community with spontaneous astronomy viewing sessions.
MT. ELGON, KENYA — On April 8, 2026, the ForbSpace field team successfully executed a location-enabled data collection mission in the Mt. Elgon region. The primary objective of the exercise was to capture highly accurate spatial data encompassing the region's diverse topography, specifically focusing on the expansive forest canopies, river flow patterns, and other prominent geographical landmarks.
Utilizing mobile GIS and spatial tracking tools, the team navigated the rugged terrain to log critical environmental coordinates. This data will contribute to ForbSpace’s ongoing efforts in environmental monitoring and regional spatial analysis.
In addition to the primary data collection mandate, the expedition featured a highly successful community outreach component. During field breaks, the ForbSpace team deployed a Celestron telescope to conduct landscape viewing and daytime astronomy demonstrations. What began as an internal team exercise quickly drew the attention of local residents. The team facilitated an impromptu viewing session, allowing groups of local youth and adults to observe distant landscapes and celestial targets.
By integrating community engagement with scientific fieldwork, ForbSpace continues its commitment to not only studying regional environments but also fostering an interest in science and technology among local populations.
