Beyond the Data: Bringing the Cosmos to the Hills of Mt. Elgon

When the ForbSpace team packed our gear for Mt. Elgon on April 8th, our minds were focused entirely on the metrics. Our primary objective was straightforward: conduct location-enabled data collection across the region’s expansive forests and winding river systems. We needed precise coordinates and reliable spatial data.

The early hours were exactly what you expect from a rigorous field day. We navigated the rocky, uneven terrain along the riverbanks, devices in hand, logging data point after data point. We charted the dense, green canopies that define the Mt. Elgon landscape. It was great work, but it was purely technical.

However, the true highlight of the trip happened when we decided to take a break.

We had brought a Celestron telescope along for the journey, initially intending to use it for distant landscape viewing across the vast hills. Once we set it up on a grassy ridge, it didn't take long for our equipment to attract some attention. A group of curious local children approached to see what we were doing.

Instead of just explaining it to them, we invited them to look. What started as a quick demonstration turned into a full-blown, impromptu daytime astronomy and landscape viewing session.

The sheer excitement on their faces as they looked through the lens was incredible. For many, it was their first time interacting with this kind of scientific equipment. We watched as they took turns, pointing out landmarks and marveling at the magnified views of their own backyard.

At ForbSpace, we deal in data, maps, and coordinates every single day. But moments like this are a powerful reminder of why we do fieldwork in the first place. It isn't just about understanding the environment; it’s about connecting with the people who live in it. We left Mt. Elgon that day with excellent spatial data for our servers, but more importantly, we left with the memory of sparking a little bit of scientific wonder in the next generation.
